"I COULD HAVE DANCED ALL NIGHT"

MY FAIR LADY

Bed, bed I couldn't go to bed
My head's too light to try to set it down
Sleep, sleep I couldn't sleep tonight
Not for all the jewels in the crown
I could have danced all night
I could have danced all night
And still have begged for more

I could have spread my wings and done a thousand things
I've never done before
I'll never know what made it so exciting
Why all at once my heart took flight
I only know when he began to dance with me
I could have danced, danced, danced all night

The musical of My Fair Lady by Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe was inspired by the book Pygmalion by George Bernard Shaw. Charting the transformation of the uneducated Cockeney flower girl, Eliza Dolittle, into a well-spoken, well-mannered 'lady', the moral is of course about true love and seeing people for who they are. This is the exuberent moment where Eliza is so excited about dancing with Professor Higgins, her tutor, at her debutant ball, she realises that she has fallen in love with him, despite the trials and torment he has put her through for this social experiment!
