"Poyte pesni slavy Khanu!"

Sing songs of praise to the Khan!

Sing songs of glory to the Khan! Sing!
Praise the power and prowess of our Khan! Praise him!
The Khan is glorious! The Khan!
He is glorious, our Khan!

In his shining glory
Our Khan is equal to the sun.
There are no equals in glory to our Khan! None!
The slave girls of the Khan praise the Khan, their khan!

Prince Igor by Aleksandr Borodin

The Russian prince Igor gathers his army for a campaign against the nomadic Polovtsians, who have been ravaging the Russian territories. Igor’s troops are defeated, and he and his son Vladimir are taken prisoner by Khan Konchak, the ruler of the Polovtsians.

In captivity, Vladimir falls in love with the daughter of the Khan. The Khan sees Igor as a potential ally, urging him to make a truce. Igor rejects this offer and escapes. He returns home to rebuild his forces and avenge his people, who have been badly treated in his absence by a usurper, the Prince of Galich.
