19. "Soave sia il vento"

Gentle be the breeze

May the winds be gentle
May the waves be calm
And may every one of the elements
Respond warmly
To your desire.

From Mozart's Cosi fan tutte - ossia La scuola degli amanti (The way women are – or a work for the education of lovers), this trio is sung by sisters Dorabella and Fiordiligi, earnestly calling on the elements for the safe return of their fiancés, who have departed by boat to war, and sarcastically by Don Alfonso, a jaded older man who has set up an elaborate ruse to win his bet with the fiancés, two brothers. He wagers that, given the first chance, their lovers will be unfaithful, just like all women.
